Directions  (Q. Nos.111 - 120 ) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given. Certain words are given in bold in the passage to help you to locate them while answering some of the questions.

India's  cultural ties with Korea can be traced back to  nearly 2,000 years ago. The Republic of Korea (South Korea) has made rapid strides in economy since it emerged from the ravages of Korean War in 1953 and in just half a century, it has transformed itself from one of the most impoverished countries into a developed country. Today, South Korea is one of the four highly free markets and developed economies of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan that notably maintained exceptionally high growth rates (over 7 per cent a year) and unprecedented industrialisation between the 1960s and 1990s. This  is attributed to export-oriented policies and strong development policies.
India could do good to assimilate from its experience of rising from the ashes of a crippling war to become the 12th largest economy. In recent years of India's 'Look East' policy, Indo-Korea relations have become multidimensional, buoyed by significant convergence of interests.
Today, social development of Korea is symbolised by the fact that the country has for the first time elected a woman President, Park Geun-hye. And in January this year, its Cabinet inducted another woman Kang Eun-Hee as the Minister of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF). There are common social concerns regarding gender inequality that the two countries, India and SouthKorea  are grappling with. Despite economic gains, gender challenges abound in Korea. Much like in India, changing people's attitude towards gender roles is more difficult than making progressive laws. The toughest obstacles to overcome are cultural factors that are difficult to change with only government measures. Laws for equality are meaningless unless complemented by a change of thought and social acceptance.
The Korean women have not witnessed a proportional rise in their status over this period. Despite a rise in education and demands for equality, they lack teeth in matters of decision-making and political participation. The UN index on gender equality shows Korea in poor light, trailing behind even the UAE and Qatar. It has the worst gender wage gap among the industrialised countries, with female workers earning only 65 per cent of what their male counterparts make. The World Economic Forum gender index also puts countries like the Philippines, where women traditionally play greater social roles, much ahead of those with patriarchal societies, including Korea. Women lose out since child-care and work-home balance becomes a tall order in a cut-throat corporate environment.
There is a huge gap and discrepancy in opportunities, status, attitudes between men and women. Compared to the top-ranking Nordic countries, South Korea has a fewer percentage of females in its parliament, fewer women in higher ranks of industry, and higher percentages of its society having sexist or gender-prejudice views.
The common Asian culture bonds women of both the countries into a sisterhood, not discernible with their European counterparts, who generally tend to adopt an air of white superiority.
The status of women in social, economic and political spheres had significantly improved over the past few decades. But  much more is needed to be done to bring them on a par with men in the spheres of occupation, education and political participation. This is attributed to  the lack of women in senior and high-paying jobs. The focus of the present government is on increasing the participation of women in politics, improving the work-family reconciliation and balance and enhancing women's economic power and participation in the decision-making process. In the present 19th National Assembly, the percentage of women members is about 16. However, all parties are recommending and making internal efforts towards having 30 per cent women in parliament.
But, there has been a remarkable change and improvement in the number of women employees in the government as well as large corporations, in higher positions. In this dramatically changed scenario, it is not easy to reconcile work and family life. A recent survey of the family life in Korea reveals that more and more men are helping in household chores, especially among the younger generation. The ground reality is that there are stereotypes surrounding the Korean women.
The societal norm is that even if working, women alone are expected to cook, be obedient to their husband and rear children. The mothers of working women babysit grandchildren since hiring nannies and maids for house work is a costly proposition. Some even tend to voluntarily leave jobs due to family commitments since their men have been, for a long time, paid higher wages. It is further revealed that the female workers in the media industry comprised only 30 per cent of the workforce. However, their number was growing. Shopping and moving around in Seoul, shows many young women on shop floors and offices. It is said thousands of women are employed in factories making textiles, clothes, shoes and electronic components. An increase in the number of women in leadership roles can help change attitudes over time, when it would become socially acceptable for men to be equal to women. But it's a long way till their voice is heard enough for them to get teeth.

Directions  (Q. Nos.111 - 120 ) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given. Certain words are given in bold in the passage to help you to locate them while answering some of the questions.

People's self-esteem, their need to gain approval or avoid humiliation are psychological drivers that help fuel conflicts, and must be factored into attempts to bring about peace, says an expert.

Like most individuals, leaders of countries or armed groups may go to great lengths to protect their self-esteem, and this can make them deaf to reason, said Paul Randolph, a mediation expert at Regent's University London and author of a new book on the issue.
He said fear of humiliation has played a significant part in propelling conflicts among nations. Several rounds of peace talks to end their disputes and wars fall flat.
Negotiators’ repeated efforts to tackle the issue too fall short.

"It's a very, very complex situation. But why leaders of nations do not step down is the same driver that prevents somebody from saying sorry... it is a shame for them, and shame is painful," Randolph told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Scientists have found that an attack on a person's self-esteem activates the same parts of the brain as physical pain, he said. "So when you're humiliated, your brain interprets it as if you're putting your finger in the fire... our brain doesn't like it and it won't allow us to do it," he said. That, combined with the desire to make a mark on the world - another expression of self-esteem - makes it hard for leaders to retreat.
But what is needed in such a situation is a "golden bridge", a concept from ancient China, which advises any wise conquering general to build a golden bridge on which his defeated enemy can retreat, Randolph added.

"All disputes are really very simple in the sense that it's about somebody wanting something and somebody else not being prepared to give it," said Randolph.
Each side usually has both rational and psychological elements to them. So psychology has a huge part to play in understanding and resolving disputes, and getting the parties to shift their positions from a degree of intransigence to being collaborative, he added.

Crucial to the process is for disputing parties to feel heard, which boosts their self-esteem.
"One of the extraordinary things about mediation is that if the parties feel heard, their anger subsides," Randolph said. That is when logic and reason can begin, and through negotiation the needs of both sides can be addressed. The aim is to end up with no winner or loser, but with both sides gaining, he said. — Reuters

Directions  (Q. Nos.111 - 120 ) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given. Certain words are given in bold in the passage to help you to locate them while answering some of the questions.

China today said its economy continued to slow down in the first quarter this year, declining to 6.7% but in line with government targets amid claims by officials that several key indicators showed signs of stabilisation in the world’s second largest economy.
The country’s GDP grew 6.7% year-on-year to reach 15.9 trillion yuan ($2.4 trillion), data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed.
The growth further narrowed from the previous quarter’s 6.8%, which was already the lowest quarterly rate in seven years.
Chinese economy logged 6.9% last year, the lowest in over two-and-a-half decades.
Officials, however, say that Q1 growth of 6.7% was in line with market expectations and remained within the government’s targeted range between 6.5 and 7% for 2016.
New growth momentum is gathering and some major indicators have seen positive changes, NBS spokesperson Sheng Laiyun said, calling the first-quarter performance “a good start” to this year.
The retail sales of consumer goods increased 10.3% in the first quarter year-on-year which points to increase in consumer demand as China tried to reset its export-led economy to one based on services and consumption to halt the slowdown.
In March, retail sales were up 10.5% year-on-year, faster than the growth rate in the first two months this year.
The value-added industrial output, an important economic indicator, expanded 5.8% year-on-year in the first quarter, accelerating from the 5.4% increase for the January-February period as per NBS data.
Fixed-asset investment rose 10.7% year-on-year in the first quarter, a faster expansion than last year’s 10%. Investment in the property sector grew 6.2%, accelerating from 1% for the whole of 2015.
The services sector grew 7.6%, outpacing a 2.9% increase in the primary industry and 5.8% in the secondary industry. It accounted for 56.9% of the overall economy, up 2 percentage points from a year earlier, Sheng said.
A prolonged industrial glut, sagging foreign trade and cooling property investment dragged down China’s growth in 2015 to 6.9%, the slowest pace in 25 years.
Authorities have taken a slew of measures to mitigate the downshift, cutting interest rates, reducing taxes, slashing overcapacity and initiating reforms to improve efficiency. — PTI
